Depression: A Heavy Weight to Carry

Imagine carrying a heavy backpack, filled with bricks, up a steep hill. Every step feels like a struggle, and the weight seems to grow heavier with each passing moment. That's what living with depression can feel like. It can be a constant battle against a seemingly insurmountable force.

Depression isn't just feeling sad or down. It's a pervasive darkness that can cloud your thoughts, drain your energy, and make even the simplest tasks feel like a monumental effort. It's like fighting against a relentless tide, where no matter how hard you try, you're still being pulled backward.

If you’re experiencing depression, you might also feel like you’re out in the middle of a lake alone- isolated and unsure of how to find anything out there that will help you reach shore again.

You might have noticed a loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, feeling numb to your emotions, muted, or empty. It's like the world has lost its color, and everything feels flat and uninteresting. Even activities that used to bring joy and excitement now seem mundane or even pointless. It can be difficult to concentrate, sleep, or find motivation. Everyday tasks that were once routine can become overwhelming and exhausting. This emotional detachment can be incredibly isolating and can make it difficult to connect with others or find meaning in life.

The emotional toll of depression can shift the direction of your life. Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and guilt can deteriorate your self-esteem. It can be hard to see a future beyond the present darkness, and for some people that means that thoughts of self-harm or suicide may become a normal part of coping with depression.

It's important to remember that these feelings are part of the illness and don't reflect your true self. With the right support, it's possible to break through this emotional fog and rediscover the vibrancy of life.

Depression is a signal from your brain

About 1 in 4 people will experience depression at some point in their lives- which means it is something adaptive as our brains try to cope with life. Think of depression as a signal that something has been too difficult for too long or that your mind and body are trying to cope with something that isn’t easy to handle. When you feel stuck or unhappy for too long, losing motivation and essentially withdrawing from participating in life is a common way that the mind copes. You’re not broken, but your mind has gotten too good at allowing these signals to take over and become the primary way to protect you.

Therapy can Help you understand the signals

Depression is something that a lot of people have experienced, so over time we have found effective ways to understand the signals and work through them. Because of the nature of depression, it’s one of the toughest things to get yourself out of alone. Finding the right support, through therapy or elsewhere, can be the key you need to understand where your depression is coming from and why it is lingering. We’d like you to feel like help is on it’s way, and that you won’t have to feel lost or lifeless much longer.

Maybe You’re Considering counseling for Depression, But Something is making it hard to reach out…

It feels overwhelming to gather everything needed to see the right therapist.

We understand that between insurance questions and scheduling and therapist specialties, it can be overwhelming. If you feel too overwhelmed to know how to begin, submit your name and a preferred method of contact in one of our forms along with the word “depression”. We have a client coordinator that is here to help get all the necessary details taken care of so you can focus on one thing, getting the support you deserve.

I’m worried about being judged or seen as “not okay.”

It's completely normal to feel this way, especially given the stigma surrounding mental health. Millions of people struggle with depression daily, and therapy is a judgement free space to get support while keeping your struggles confidential and private. Having depression doesn’t mean that you are weak or broken, but not getting help can lead you to feel that way over time. Our therapists are trained to maintain your privacy and help you with difficult conversations if you feel you have to communicate with others about your depression.

Can Therapy really help?

We understand that depression can make life feel hopeless and it's difficult to find the motivation to seek help. If you decide to try therapy, our therapists will support you in creating a consistent schedule to maximize your support and benefits. Our therapists prioritize your goals and well-being. They understand that if therapy isn't improving your situation, you can adjust or end sessions at any time. There's no commitment to a specific number of sessions. We believe that after your first session, you'll notice the many ways therapy can benefit you.
